“Our Bodies” a book that launches on the 1st of December 2017 is a body Jelly Beanz has been working on to help parents, teachers and caregivers have conversations with children about sexuality. The book, while covering serious topics, has provided the office with much laughter. We have laughed at the translating of words and in the process learning the Xhosa and Afrikaans terms for the English words. I am happy to say I can now say the word Penis and Vagina in all five languages the book is available in- not something I thought I would ever be able to proudly state. The book has also provided us with an avenue for discussing with one another our own experiences of learning about sex. Cue Alida singing “Let’s talk about Sex, Baby”. We find it ever fascinating that in a world that is continuously changing and fast moving this is one thing that stays constant. Children are curious about how they are made and where they came from. We hope that you, as parents, teachers and caregivers also find the joy in the book and see the excitement in the children as they find out that they are true miracles of life. Maybe in the process you will remember what is was like the first time you had the talk about “the birds and the bees” and you’ll also feel a hint of laugter at the awkward and delightful moment you found out how all of “Our Bodies” work.
