The use of children's stories and books as an aid to emotional support and healing is well established in the practice of psychology and play therapy. The book is filled with illustrated stories with powerful messages that can be used as an effective tool in bringing about behavioural change as well as emotional healing in children.
Although this book has specifically been compiled for use in the therapeutic work with children who have been affected by trauma and abuse, the stories can also be used to read to any child with the aim of teaching them life skills concerning different challenging situations. Each story contains information regarding the age of the child for which the story is most appropriate and the key life lesson contained in the story. This book of healing stories for Africa's children draws on therapeutic stories written by professional helpers and stories told by inspiring Africans.
The authors of the book, Edith Kriel, (social worker and play therapist); Marita Rademeyer (clinical psychologist) and Else Röhrs (a retired teacher) have compiled a number of therapeutic stories that they have found useful in therapeutic work with children over the years.
